Systematics in the Power-to-X Approach—Identification, Characterization and Clustering of Power-to-X Technologies

Abstract

Um das Pariser Klimaschutzabkommen zu erfullen, wurden im deutschen Klimaschutzplan 2050 ambitionierte Ziele festgesetzt. Die direkte Nutzung erneuerbarer Energien und die Sektorenkopplung sind dabei zentrale Masnahmen, um die Defossilisierung der Wirtschaft voranzubringen (BMUB 2016). Vielversprechende Ansatze, um den Anteil erneuerbarer Energien durch Stromnutzung in den Sektoren mit bisher geringen Treibhausgasreduktionen – Warme, Verkehr und Industrie – zu erhohen, bieten Power-to-X-Technologien. Dabei wird Strom fur die spatere energetische Nutzung gespeichert oder uber technische Verfahren zur Herstellung von Wertschopfungsprodukten bzw. fur Dienstleistungen eingesetzt. Mit Hilfe von Power-to-X-Technologien wird so das Sektorenkopplungspotenzial von Strom erschlossen und gleichzeitig werden Defossilisierungsoptionen insbesondere fur die oben genannten Sektoren eroffnet. Durch die Vielfalt an Verfahren und die grosen Nutzungspotenziale stehen Power-to-X-Technologien derzeit im Fokus einer groseren Debatte. Eine Analyse zur Begriffsverwendung in der Literatur zeigt, dass kein Konsens zur Definition von Power-to‑X und den zugehorigen Technologien besteht: Teilweise wird der Begriff spezifisch fur nur wenige technologische Konzepte verwendet, auf der anderen Seite aber auch sehr breit und fur eine grose Vielfalt an Konzepten. Dieser Artikel zeigt die bisherige Begriffsverwendung in ihrer Bandbreite auf, arbeitet Gemeinsamkeiten und Differenzierungsmerkmale heraus und leitet eine Systematik des Power-to-X-Ansatzes ab. Auf dieser Grundlage wird ein Definitionsvorschlag formuliert, mit dem Power-to-X-Technologien anschliesend eindeutig identifiziert und sinnvoll in Kategorien eingeordnet werden. Dies soll einen Beitrag leisten zu einem einheitlichen Verstandnis von Power-to‑X, auf dessen Grundlage die Diskussion um verfugbare Technologien und deren Entwicklungsmoglichkeiten fur Anwendungen gefuhrt werden kann.
