    Agromining involves growing selected hyperaccumulator plant species ('metal crops') on low-grade ore bodies or mineralized (ultramafic) soils, or anthropogenic metal rich materials (e.g. contaminated soils, mine spoils, industrial sludge), prior to biomass harvesting and incineration to recover valuable metals or salts. This chapter begins with an introduction that explains the concepts of phytomining and agromining. We then acknowledge the role of agronomy in enhancing metal yield of 'metal crops,' with emphasis on Ni. Highlighted in the selection of sites section is the issue of potential agromining substrates, and the role of metal phytoavailability in economic agromining. We present criteria for selecting potential 'metal crops' and possible regions where these species are most suited for successful agromining operations. We then discuss thoroughly the soil and plant management practices that have been proposed to increase biomass and metal yield of 'metal crops.' Also reported is progress of the tropical agronomic trials. Finally, we provide a conclusion and present an outlook on the agronomy of 'metal crops' used in agromining.

    [Departement_IRSTEA]Territoires [ADD1_IRSTEA]Dynamique et fonctionnement des écosystèmesChapter 1; International audience; The Green Revolution and the introduction of chemical fertilizers, synthetic pesticides and high yield crops had enabled to increase food production in the mid and late 20th. The benefits of this agricultural intensification have however reached their limits since yields are no longer increasing for many crops, negative externalities on the environment and human health are now recognized and economic inequality between farmers have increased. Agroecology has been proposed to secure food supply with fewer or lower negative environmental and social impacts than intensive agriculture. Agroecology principles are based on the recognition that biodiversity in agroecosystems can provide more than only food, fibre and timber. Hence, biodiversity and its associated functions, such as pollination, pest control, and mechanisms that maintain or improve soil fertility, may improve production efficiency and sustainability of agroecosystems. Although appealing, promoting ecological-based agricultural production is not straightforward since agroecosystems are socio-ecosystems with complex interactions between the ecological and social systems that act at different spatial and temporal scales. To be operational, agroecology thus requires understanding the relationships between biodiversity, functions and management, as well as to take into account the links between agriculture, ecology and the society. Here we review current knowledge on (i) the effect of landscape context on biodiversity and ecosystem functions and (ii) trophic and non-trophic interactions in ecological networks in agroecosystems. In particular, many insights have been made these two previous decades on (i) the interacting effects of management and landscape characteristics on biodiversity, (ii) the crucial role of plant diversity in delivering multiple services and (iii) the variety of ecological belowground mechanisms determining soil fertility in interaction with aboveground processes. However, we also pinpointed the absence of consensus on the effects of landscape heterogeneity on biodiversity and the need for a better mechanistic understanding of the effects of landscape and agricultural variables on farmland food webs and related services. We end by proposing new research avenues to fill knowledge gaps and implement agroecological principles within operational management strategies.

    Abstract An evaluation of the importance of the thermo-hydro-mechanical couplings (THM) on the performance assessment of a deep underground storage design has been made as part of the international DECOVALEX III project. It is a numerical study that simulates a generic repository configuration in the near field in a homogeneous hard rock. A periodic pattern comprises a single vertical borehole, containing a canister surrounded by an over-pack and a bentonite layer, and the backfilled upper portion of the gallery. The thermo-hydro-mechanical evolution of the whole configuration is simulated over a period of 100 years. The importance of the rock mass intrinsic permeability has been investigated through three values : 10−17, 10−18 and 10−19 m2. Comparison of the results predicted by fully coupled THM analysis as well as partially coupled TH, TM and HM analysis, in terms of several predefined indicators, enables us to identify the couplings, which play a crucial role with respect to safety issues. The results demonstrate that temperature is hardly affected by the couplings. In contrast the influence of the couplings on the mechanical stresses is considerable.

    International audience; Open quantum systems that are at or beyond the limit of particle-emission stability exhibit generic features stemming from their coupling to an environment of positive energy states and decay channels. In nuclear physics, the exotic helium isotopes ${ {}^{5-10}\text {He} }$ and the four-neutron system ${ {}^{4}\text {n} }$ represent two prototypical cases of open quantum systems whose structures are highly impacted by the environment. In the first part, a practical approach inspired by halo effective field theory for the description of ${ {}^{5-10}\text {He} }$ within tens of keV uncertainties is presented and the parity inversion in ${ {}^{9}\text {He} }$, as well as the possible two-neutron decay of ${ {}^{10}\text {He} }$ are discussed. The second part discusses the last ab initio results on the four-neutron system obtained using chiral forces and including continuum couplings.

    HELIOS is a 4 year project to carry out a comparative assessment of 4 types of lithium-ion battery technology (NCA, LFP, NMC and LMO-NCA or LMO-blend/Graphite). The assessments concern traction batteries for the automotive sector (Electric Vehicles and Plug-in HEV). The evaluations are carried out on ‘real’ size high energy cells with a capacity of approximately 40 Ah, produced industrially. In total, up to 220 cells have been employed across the various cell types and test activities (safety tests on new and pre-aged cells), cycling and calendar tests (12–15 months). The comparisons have been achieved from laboratory testing and other analysis of full sized battery cells in order to determine comparative assessment of Performance, life, cost, recycling and safety characteristics. This paper makes a review of the main results of Helios project.

    Authors: Louis S. Santiago; Damien Bonal; Mark E. De Guzman; Eleinis Ávila-Lovera;

    Climate change is predicted to increase the occurrence of extreme droughts, which are associated with elevated mortality rates in tropical trees. Drought-induced mortality is thought to occur by two main mechanisms: hydraulic failure or carbon starvation . This chapter focuses on the strategies that plants use to survive these two drought-induced mortality mechanisms and how these mechanisms are distributed among the immense diversity of tropical tree species. The traits that tropical trees may use to survive drought include (1) xylem that is resistant to drought-induced cavitation , (2) high sapwood capacitance that protects xylem from critically low water potentials , (3) drought deciduousness, (4) photosynthetic stems that have the potential to assimilate carbon at greater water-use efficiency than leaves, (5) deep roots, (6) regulation of gas exchange to reduce leaf water loss or to maintain photosynthesis at low leaf water potential and (7) when all else fails, low cuticular conductance from exposed tissues during extended drought. To date, most research has focused on deciduousness, resistant xylem, soil water, gas exchange behavior and sapwood capacitance, whereas little is known about the role of photosynthetic stems or cuticular conductance during extreme extended drought, making these processes a high priority for a complete understanding of tropical tree physiology during drought.

    In Bench Mark Test no. 1 (BMT1) of the DECOVALEX III international project, we looked at the implications of coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) processes on the safety of a hypothetical nuclear waste repository. The research teams first calibrated their models with the results of an in-situ heater experiments to obtain confidence in the capability of the models to simulate the main physical processes. Then the models were used to perform scoping calculations for the near-field of the hypothetical repository, with varying degrees of THM coupling complexity. The general conclusion from the BMT1 exercise is that it would be prudent to perform full THM coupling analyses for two main reasons. First, several safety features might be overlooked with lesser degrees of coupling. Second, the ability to predict and interpret several physical processes, during the post-closure monitoring period, is important for confidence building and public acceptance. Such ability is attainable only with fully coupled THM models.

    International audience; Helmholtz stereovision methods are limited to binocular stereovision or depth maps reconstruction. In this paper, we extend these methods to recover the full 3D shape of the objects of a scene from multiview Helmholtz stereopsis. Thus, we are able to reconstruct the complete three-dimensional shape of objects made of any arbitrary and unknown bidirectional reflectance distribution function. Unlike previous methods, this can be achieved using a full surface representation model. In particular occlusions (self occlusions as well as cast shadows) are easier to handle in the surface optimization process. More precisely, we use a triangular mesh representation which allows to naturally specify relationships between the geometry of a point of the scene and its surface normal. We show how to implement the presented approach using a coherent gradient descent flow. Results and benefits are illustrated on various examples.

    Authors: Philip Nti Nkrumah; Rufus L. Chaney; Jean Louis Morel;
