It has been documented that PEVs serving as V2G systems can offer possible backup for renewable power sources, can provide reactive power support, active power regulation, load balancing, peak load shaving, can reduce utility operating costs and can generate revenue. Here we show that PEVs can even improve power grid transient stability, that is, stability when the power grid is subjected to large disturbances, including bus faults, generator and branch tripping, and sudden large load changes. A control strategy that regulates the power output of a fleet of PEVs based on the speed of generator turbines is proposed and tested on the New England 10-unit 39-bus power system. By regulating the power output of the PEVs we show that (1) speed and voltage fluctuations resulting from large disturbances can be significantly reduced up to five times, and (2) the critical clearing time can be extended by 20–40%. Studies of complex physical and engineering systems, represented by multi-scale and multi-physics computer simulations have an increasing demand for computing power, especially when the simulations of realistic problems are considered. This demand is driven by the increasing size and complexity of the studied systems or the time constraints. Ultrascale computing systems offer a possible solution to this problem. Future ultrascale systems will be large-scale complex computing systems combining technologies from high performance computing, distributed systems, big data, and cloud computing. Thus, the challenge of developing and programming complex algorithms on these systems is twofold. Firstly, the complex algorithms have to be either developed from scratch, or redesigned in order to yield high performance, while retaining correct functional behaviour. Secondly, ultrascale computing systems impose a number of non-functional cross-cutting concerns, such as fault tolerance or energy consumption, which can significantly impact the deployment of applications on large complex systems. This article discusses the state-of-the-art of programming for current and future large scale systems with an emphasis on complex applications. We derive a number of programming and execution support requirements by studying several computing applications that the authors are currently developing and discuss their potential and necessary upgrades for ultrascale execution.

The aim of the paper is to identify the main factors that affect tourism development of Ohrid (North Macedonia) from the three-pillar sustainability dimension (socio-cultural, environmental and economic). Based on 630 questionnaires collected from residents in January 2020, exploratory factor analysis is conducted to assess residents’ satisfaction with given impacts of tourism. The research revealed positive socio-cultural and economic factors and negative environmental impacts, indicating that Ohrid is practicing neither sustainable, nor responsible tourism development. Despite having legislation and an institutional framework to safeguard Ohrid’s World Heritage property, many serious concerns were noted with regards to the sustainability values. The findings may assist policy makers in establishing tourism planning process and developing sustainable development strategies.

Several technological aspects are subject to continuous improvement. This paper tackles the possibilities for denser panel population of a photovoltaic plant thus more efficient space utilization. The objective is to develop a mathematical model of inter-shading among the photovoltaic panels. The model calculates the electrical energy obtained from panels and considers the shading among the panels. The geographical location of the plant location, the distances between the solar panels and their angle of inclination, the dimensions of the panels and the time interval under evaluation are the parameters which are important for placing the power plant. The results show how much electric energy can be obtained from a certain set of photovoltaic panels. The results indicate, what are the distances between the panels for better allocation of resources when deciding on the number of solar panels and their arrangement.

Fusarium circinatum, the causal agent of pine pitch canker (PPC), is currently one of the most important threats of Pinus spp. globally. This pathogen is known in many pine-growing regions, including natural and planted forests, and can affect all life stages of trees, from emerging seedlings to mature trees. Despite the importance of PPC, the global distribution of F. circinatum is poorly documented, and this problem is also true of the hosts within countries that are affected. The aim of this study was to review the global distribution of F. circinatum, with a particular focus on Europe. We considered (1) the current and historical pathogen records, both positive and negative, based on confirmed reports from Europe and globally; (2) the genetic diversity and population structure of the pathogen; (3) the current distribution of PPC in Europe, comparing published models of predicted disease distribution; and (4) host susceptibility by reviewing literature and generating a comprehensive list of known hosts for the fungus. These data were collated from 41 countries and used to compile a specially constructed geo-database. A review of 6297 observation records showed that F. circinatum and the symptoms it causes on conifers occurred in 14 countries, including four in Europe, and is absent in 28 countries. Field observations and experimental data from 138 host species revealed 106 susceptible host species including 85 Pinus species, 6 non-pine tree species and 15 grass and herb species. Our data confirm that susceptibility to F. circinatum varies between different host species, tree ages and environmental characteristics. Knowledge on the geographic distribution, host range and the relative susceptibility of different hosts is essential for disease management, mitigation and containment strategies. The findings reported in this review will support countries that are currently free of F. circinatum in implementing effective procedures and restrictions and prevent further spread of the pathogen. This study reviews and synthesises existing information generated within the SCOPSCO (Scientific Collaboration on Past Speciation Conditions in Lake Ohrid) deep drilling project. The four main aims of the project are to infer (i) the age and origin of Lake Ohrid (Former Yu-goslav Republic of Macedonia/Republic of Albania), (ii) its regional seismotectonic history, (iii) volcanic activity and climate change in the central northern Mediterranean region, and (iv) the influence of major geological events on the evolution of its endemic species. The Ohrid basin formed by transtension during the Miocene, opened during the Pliocene and Pleistocene, and the lake established de novo in the still relatively narrow valley between 1.9 and 1.3 Ma. The lake history is recorded in a 584 m long sediment sequence, which was recovered within the framework of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) from the central part (DEEP site) of the lake in spring 2013. To date, 54 tephra and cryptotephra horizons have been found in the upper 460 m of this sequence. Tephrochronology and tuning biogeochemical proxy data to orbital parameters revealed that the upper 247.8 m represent the last 637 kyr. The multi-proxy data set covering these 637 kyr indicates long-term variability. Some proxies show a change from generally cooler and wetter to drier and warmer glacial and in-terglacial periods around 300 ka. Short-term environmental change caused, for example, by tephra deposition or the climatic impact of millennial-scale Dansgaard-Oeschger and Heinrich events are superimposed on the long-term trends. Evolutionary studies on the extant fauna indicate that Lake Ohrid was not a refugial area for regional freshwater animals. This differs from the surrounding catchment, where the mountainous setting with relatively high water availability provided a refuge for temperate and montane trees during the relatively cold and dry glacial periods. Although Lake Ohrid experienced significant environmental change over the last 637 kyr, preliminary molecular data from extant microgas-tropod species do not indicate significant changes in diversification rate during this period. Autoresonance in 3-wave simulations was demonstrated in a previous study (Chapman et al. ,P hys. Plasmas17, 122317 (2010)). These results are applied to particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. Good agreement is found between PIC simulations and a 3-wave model using a nonlinear frequency shift beyond the regime usually referred to as "weakly kinetic". Autoresonance is studied for a range of values of kLD. A nonlinear oscillator driven from rest at a fixed frequency will quickly dephase from its driver, ending the efficient exchange of energy. However, if the driver is instead swept in frequency, passing slowly through resonance with the oscillator, the oscillator may undergo autoresonance, phase-locking to the driver and remaining in resonance as its amplitude grows. During autoresonance, the oscillator self- adjusts its amplitude, and therefore frequency, in order to maintain resonance. This process may occur without feedback, and thus is applied in a range of contexts where the constraints on the speed and precision of driver modulation required to maintain resonance artificially would be unattainable: recent examples in plasmas include the control of the diocotron mode in a Malmberg-Penning trap (1), and the manipulation of anti-protons and positrons to form anti-hydrogen (2). Stimulated Raman scattering is the 3-wave parametric instability in which laser light (the pump wave) scatters off of a density fluctuation in a plasma, driving a Langmuir wave. The scattered light (the seed wave) beats with the laser light, further enhancing the ponderomotive force that drives the Langmuir wave, leading to unstable growth. A range of processes may detune the 3-wave resonance necessary for the efficient scattering of the laser light. This article considers the interplay between two detuning mechanisms: the inhomogeneity of the plasma density profile, and kinetic effects. The linear dispersion relations of the three waves are functions of the local electron plasma frequency, pe. Consequently, as a given excited mode (electromagnetic or electrostatic) propagates, it undergoes a wave number shift. Three waves initially resonant at density n0, with pump, seed and Langmuir wave frequencies 0,1,L and wave numbers k0,1,L, respectively, will dephase from resonance due to this wave number shift as they propagate through the changing density. At n0, the resonance conditions 0 = 1 + L and k0 = k1 + kL are satisfied. The contribution of this work is twofold: (i) estimation of the hydraulic operation of a coal combustion byproduct (CCBs) through its physical filtration by developing a physical model, and in broader terms, (ii) promoting the transformation of native disposal materials into beneficial materials. We developed an experiment which examines fly ash as a CCBs for its hydraulic performance, and runs in four main stages: First, fly ash in its natural state is tested in the laboratory to check if its effective size and uniformity coefficient match with recommendations in the literature; Then, fly ash of effective grain size as recommended in the literature is derived; Further, a physical model comprised of such a derived fly ash media filter and which supports horizontal flow of the effluent is developed; Finally, the hydraulic performance of the physical model comprised of derived fly ash in presence of effluent is evaluated and proved that fly ash is an appropriate media filter for hydraulic performance. The work clearly highlights the potential of the easy to reach and costless native fly ash as a media filter for treatment of wastewater which we consider a viable future work.

The target of a 37% increase relates to participation of renewable energy sources in electricity production. It requires construction of new significant capacities of renewable energy power plants as clearly defined in the National Action Plan for Renewable Energy Sources. This paper comprises critical analyses of targeted new installed capacity of renewable energy power plants for electricity production from different point of views, such as: new national energy policy, new national regulations, renewable energy sources potential in Serbia, efficiency of power plants and the investment financial models. According to the new national energy policy identified in the National Action Plan for Renewable Energy Sources, it is concluded that the new regulations related to the construction of new renewable energy power plants is completed, particularly concerning the investment security, provision of green electricity market, status of green electricity producer, and significant reduction of time for administrative procedures required to obtain a building permit. Particularly, the real wind potential in Serbia, based on the measured data over the past ten years of measurement campaigns at more than thirty locations, has been used to correct the targeted installed capacity of wind power plants.

It has been documented that PEVs serving as V2G systems can offer possible backup for renewable power sources, can provide reactive power support, active power regulation, load balancing, peak load shaving, can reduce utility operating costs and can generate revenue. Here we show that PEVs can even improve power grid transient stability, that is, stability when the power grid is subjected to large disturbances, including bus faults, generator and branch tripping, and sudden large load changes. A control strategy that regulates the power output of a fleet of PEVs based on the speed of generator turbines is proposed and tested on the New England 10-unit 39-bus power system. By regulating the power output of the PEVs we show that (1) speed and voltage fluctuations resulting from large disturbances can be significantly reduced up to five times, and (2) the critical clearing time can be extended by 20–40%. Studies of complex physical and engineering systems, represented by multi-scale and multi-physics computer simulations have an increasing demand for computing power, especially when the simulations of realistic problems are considered. This demand is driven by the increasing size and complexity of the studied systems or the time constraints. Ultrascale computing systems offer a possible solution to this problem. Future ultrascale systems will be large-scale complex computing systems combining technologies from high performance computing, distributed systems, big data, and cloud computing. Thus, the challenge of developing and programming complex algorithms on these systems is twofold. Firstly, the complex algorithms have to be either developed from scratch, or redesigned in order to yield high performance, while retaining correct functional behaviour. Secondly, ultrascale computing systems impose a number of non-functional cross-cutting concerns, such as fault tolerance or energy consumption, which can significantly impact the deployment of applications on large complex systems. This article discusses the state-of-the-art of programming for current and future large scale systems with an emphasis on complex applications. We derive a number of programming and execution support requirements by studying several computing applications that the authors are currently developing and discuss their potential and necessary upgrades for ultrascale execution.

The aim of the paper is to identify the main factors that affect tourism development of Ohrid (North Macedonia) from the three-pillar sustainability dimension (socio-cultural, environmental and economic). Based on 630 questionnaires collected from residents in January 2020, exploratory factor analysis is conducted to assess residents’ satisfaction with given impacts of tourism. The research revealed positive socio-cultural and economic factors and negative environmental impacts, indicating that Ohrid is practicing neither sustainable, nor responsible tourism development. Despite having legislation and an institutional framework to safeguard Ohrid’s World Heritage property, many serious concerns were noted with regards to the sustainability values. The findings may assist policy makers in establishing tourism planning process and developing sustainable development strategies.

Several technological aspects are subject to continuous improvement. This paper tackles the possibilities for denser panel population of a photovoltaic plant thus more efficient space utilization. The objective is to develop a mathematical model of inter-shading among the photovoltaic panels. The model calculates the electrical energy obtained from panels and considers the shading among the panels. The geographical location of the plant location, the distances between the solar panels and their angle of inclination, the dimensions of the panels and the time interval under evaluation are the parameters which are important for placing the power plant. The results show how much electric energy can be obtained from a certain set of photovoltaic panels. The results indicate, what are the distances between the panels for better allocation of resources when deciding on the number of solar panels and their arrangement.

Fusarium circinatum, the causal agent of pine pitch canker (PPC), is currently one of the most important threats of Pinus spp. globally. This pathogen is known in many pine-growing regions, including natural and planted forests, and can affect all life stages of trees, from emerging seedlings to mature trees. Despite the importance of PPC, the global distribution of F. circinatum is poorly documented, and this problem is also true of the hosts within countries that are affected. The aim of this study was to review the global distribution of F. circinatum, with a particular focus on Europe. We considered (1) the current and historical pathogen records, both positive and negative, based on confirmed reports from Europe and globally; (2) the genetic diversity and population structure of the pathogen; (3) the current distribution of PPC in Europe, comparing published models of predicted disease distribution; and (4) host susceptibility by reviewing literature and generating a comprehensive list of known hosts for the fungus. These data were collated from 41 countries and used to compile a specially constructed geo-database. A review of 6297 observation records showed that F. circinatum and the symptoms it causes on conifers occurred in 14 countries, including four in Europe, and is absent in 28 countries. Field observations and experimental data from 138 host species revealed 106 susceptible host species including 85 Pinus species, 6 non-pine tree species and 15 grass and herb species. Our data confirm that susceptibility to F. circinatum varies between different host species, tree ages and environmental characteristics. Knowledge on the geographic distribution, host range and the relative susceptibility of different hosts is essential for disease management, mitigation and containment strategies. The findings reported in this review will support countries that are currently free of F. circinatum in implementing effective procedures and restrictions and prevent further spread of the pathogen. This study reviews and synthesises existing information generated within the SCOPSCO (Scientific Collaboration on Past Speciation Conditions in Lake Ohrid) deep drilling project. The four main aims of the project are to infer (i) the age and origin of Lake Ohrid (Former Yu-goslav Republic of Macedonia/Republic of Albania), (ii) its regional seismotectonic history, (iii) volcanic activity and climate change in the central northern Mediterranean region, and (iv) the influence of major geological events on the evolution of its endemic species. The Ohrid basin formed by transtension during the Miocene, opened during the Pliocene and Pleistocene, and the lake established de novo in the still relatively narrow valley between 1.9 and 1.3 Ma. The lake history is recorded in a 584 m long sediment sequence, which was recovered within the framework of the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP) from the central part (DEEP site) of the lake in spring 2013. To date, 54 tephra and cryptotephra horizons have been found in the upper 460 m of this sequence. Tephrochronology and tuning biogeochemical proxy data to orbital parameters revealed that the upper 247.8 m represent the last 637 kyr. The multi-proxy data set covering these 637 kyr indicates long-term variability. Some proxies show a change from generally cooler and wetter to drier and warmer glacial and in-terglacial periods around 300 ka. Short-term environmental change caused, for example, by tephra deposition or the climatic impact of millennial-scale Dansgaard-Oeschger and Heinrich events are superimposed on the long-term trends. Evolutionary studies on the extant fauna indicate that Lake Ohrid was not a refugial area for regional freshwater animals. This differs from the surrounding catchment, where the mountainous setting with relatively high water availability provided a refuge for temperate and montane trees during the relatively cold and dry glacial periods. Although Lake Ohrid experienced significant environmental change over the last 637 kyr, preliminary molecular data from extant microgas-tropod species do not indicate significant changes in diversification rate during this period. The reasons for this constant rate remain largely unknown, but a possible lack of environmentally induced extinction events in Lake Ohrid and/or the high resilience of the ecosystems may have played a role. Autoresonance in 3-wave simulations was demonstrated in a previous study (Chapman et al. ,P hys. Plasmas17, 122317 (2010)). These results are applied to particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. Good agreement is found between PIC simulations and a 3-wave model using a nonlinear frequency shift beyond the regime usually referred to as "weakly kinetic". Autoresonance is studied for a range of values of kLD. A nonlinear oscillator driven from rest at a fixed frequency will quickly dephase from its driver, ending the efficient exchange of energy. However, if the driver is instead swept in frequency, passing slowly through resonance with the oscillator, the oscillator may undergo autoresonance, phase-locking to the driver and remaining in resonance as its amplitude grows. During autoresonance, the oscillator self- adjusts its amplitude, and therefore frequency, in order to maintain resonance. This process may occur without feedback, and thus is applied in a range of contexts where the constraints on the speed and precision of driver modulation required to maintain resonance artificially would be unattainable: recent examples in plasmas include the control of the diocotron mode in a Malmberg-Penning trap (1), and the manipulation of anti-protons and positrons to form anti-hydrogen (2). Stimulated Raman scattering is the 3-wave parametric instability in which laser light (the pump wave) scatters off of a density fluctuation in a plasma, driving a Langmuir wave. The scattered light (the seed wave) beats with the laser light, further enhancing the ponderomotive force that drives the Langmuir wave, leading to unstable growth. A range of processes may detune the 3-wave resonance necessary for the efficient scattering of the laser light. This article considers the interplay between two detuning mechanisms: the inhomogeneity of the plasma density profile, and kinetic effects. The linear dispersion relations of the three waves are functions of the local electron plasma frequency, pe. Consequently, as a given excited mode (electromagnetic or electrostatic) propagates, it undergoes a wave number shift. Three waves initially resonant at density n0, with pump, seed and Langmuir wave frequencies 0,1,L and wave numbers k0,1,L, respectively, will dephase from resonance due to this wave number shift as they propagate through the changing density. At n0, the resonance conditions 0 = 1 + L and k0 = k1 + kL are satisfied. The contribution of this work is twofold: (i) estimation of the hydraulic operation of a coal combustion byproduct (CCBs) through its physical filtration by developing a physical model, and in broader terms, (ii) promoting the transformation of native disposal materials into beneficial materials. We developed an experiment which examines fly ash as a CCBs for its hydraulic performance, and runs in four main stages: First, fly ash in its natural state is tested in the laboratory to check if its effective size and uniformity coefficient match with recommendations in the literature; Then, fly ash of effective grain size as recommended in the literature is derived; Further, a physical model comprised of such a derived fly ash media filter and which supports horizontal flow of the effluent is developed; Finally, the hydraulic performance of the physical model comprised of derived fly ash in presence of effluent is evaluated and proved that fly ash is an appropriate media filter for hydraulic performance. The work clearly highlights the potential of the easy to reach and costless native fly ash as a media filter for treatment of wastewater which we consider a viable future work.

The target of a 37% increase relates to participation of renewable energy sources in electricity production. It requires construction of new significant capacities of renewable energy power plants as clearly defined in the National Action Plan for Renewable Energy Sources. This paper comprises critical analyses of targeted new installed capacity of renewable energy power plants for electricity production from different point of views, such as: new national energy policy, new national regulations, renewable energy sources potential in Serbia, efficiency of power plants and the investment financial models. According to the new national energy policy identified in the National Action Plan for Renewable Energy Sources, it is concluded that the new regulations related to the construction of new renewable energy power plants is completed, particularly concerning the investment security, provision of green electricity market, status of green electricity producer, and significant reduction of time for administrative procedures required to obtain a building permit.
