The beds are referred to the Monastery Creek Phosphorite Formation, Gowers Formation, Inca Shale Formation and Devon-court Limestone Formation. The finds include arthropod type-A larvae previously described by Muller & Walossek and several complete appendages, possibly of early Palaeozoic ‘ostracodes’, as well as indeterminable cuticular remains. The Australian sediments were in part deposited under high water-energy conditions, whereas previously known occurrences of three-dimensional soft-integument preservation have been from environments of lower water energy. Such preservation may thus be more widespread in the Early Paleozoic than hitherto known. □Phosphatization, arthropods, type-A larvae, appendages, Middle Cambrian, Geogina Basin, Australia, three-dimensional preservation.

Nikitina; In this article developed mathematical model is proposed to solve the problem of planning water-energy modes of the Novosibirsk HPP (Hydro Power Plant) in accordance with a predetermined optimality criterion satisfying all constraints. One of the possible versions of the model is presented in this paper. The optimality criterion of the model is ensured minimum water discharge fluctuations in the tail water from the average level in the planning periods. Experimental study of the model has been carried out with 2016–2017 data and the task of ten-day period planning from April to July (only 12 ten-day periods) was solved. Based on the results of the study, the conclusion about application perspectiveness of the developed model for planning water-energy modes of the Novosibirsk HPP was made.

The sustainability of conventional water- and energy-associated systems is being examined in terms of water-energy nexus. This study presents a high-efficiency, off-grid solar desalination system for saline water (salinities 10 and 36 g L-1) that accompanies electrocatalytic oxidations of chloride and, consequently, urine via oxidized chlorine species while concomitantly producing formate from captured CO2. A variable number of desalination cell arrays is placed between a double-layered nanoparticulate titania electrocatalyst (Ti/IrxTa1-xOy/nano-TiO2; denoted as n-TEC) anode and a porous dendrite Bi cathode. A potential bias to the n-TEC and Bi pairs initiates the transport of chloride and sodium ions in the saline water to the anode and cathode cells, respectively, at an ion transport efficiency of ?100% and a specific energy consumption of ?1.9 kWh m-3. During the desalination, the n-TEC anode catalyzes the conversion of the transported chloride into reactive chlorine species, which, in turn, mediate the decomposition of urine in the anode cell. Concurrent with the anodic process, formate is continuously produced at a faradic efficiency of >95% from the CO2 captured in the catholyte. When a photovoltaic cell (power conversion efficiency of ?18%) is coupled to the stack device with five desalination cells, the three independent processes synergistically proceed at a maximum overall solar-to-desalination system efficiency of ?16% and a maximum solar-to-formate chemical energy conversion efficiency of ?7%. - 2019 American Chemical Society. Simpson; Jessica Badenhorst; Graham P. W. Jewitt; Graham P. W. Jewitt; Marit Berchner; Ellen Davies; The Mpumalanga Province is a key source of South Africa's coal supply with over 60% of the province's surface area either being subject to mining rights or prospecting applications. Mpumalanga also possesses almost half of the country's high potential arable land. While South Africa is currently largely self-sufficient in terms of cereal grains, what this assessment of Mpumalanga highlights is that food security is increasingly being threatened by coal mining interests that serve the nation's energy needs. Water availability and quality for mining, agriculture and energy production in this province are also becoming increasingly strained. The water quality deterioration generally results from either acid mine drainage (AMD) or contaminated runoff from mines and agricultural lands. This assessment of Mpumalanga highlights the interconnectedness of energy, food, and water security, with their resultant trade-offs. The water-energy-food (WEF) nexus provides a focussed lens through which to evaluate resource security in a holistic manner. Only once regulators, NGOs, industry, and the public view the resource security challenges in Mpumalanga in an integrated manner can planning and policies that lead to sustainable development be advanced, and objectives such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) be achieved. There is, therefore, a need for WEF nexus science and data to influence integrated public policy within this province.
