Abstract In order to be effective and optimal solar installation, especially for site selection, there are lots of things to be consider such as technical, economic, social situations, etc. For the purpose of electrification of rural villages in Myanmar with photovoltaic solar energy, using the geographic information system (GIS) is a lot helpful. According to transportation network, we can make a category,” Hard to reach villages” and again power line data can also decide which villages will be priority. Then according to population density, we can decide the size of the installation.

Renewable energy is one of the critical solutions to address the ever-increasing demand for energy. In developing countries such as Zimbabwe where the conventional generation hardly sustains half of the nation’s energy demands, renewable energy solutions are compensating for the deficit. Among these renewables, solar energy technologies have witnessed rapid growth. In most cases, solar energy installers assume to have all the knowledge required in the field. However, many technical barriers still exist within the field of solar energy systems. For solar energy systems which are synchronized to the grid, the integration of these renewables pose a serious stability and protection threat to the already unstable and even stable grids. In this paper, some of the technical problems being faced are discussed. Policy issues as well as the possible solutions needed in order to realize full, unhindered growth of solar energy are addressed.

Photovoltaic energy is one of the most relevant renewable energy due to its fast growth in the last years. The sizes of the solar panels and the solar power plants are also increasing. Therefore, the modern solar plants require new maintenance techniques that ensure the efficiency and rentability. In this field, condition monitoring systems play an essential role because they can increase the reliability, reduce cost and, therefore, improve the operation of the solar plant. The goal of this paper is to develop a new monitoring system composed of an unmanned aerial vehicle fitted with a thermal camera. This paper studies the capability of the system to detect defects in the solar panels or external factors that affect to the optimal operation. Firstly, the system is tested in an experimental platform under controlled conditions and, then, some experiments in a real solar plant are carried out. The data provided by the system is analyzed and converted into useful information of the state of the panels. It is demonstrated that this system can detect some specific failures and elements that affect the normal condition of the panels.
