    For the calculation of turbulent mixing in the bottom boundary layer, we present simple analytical tools for the mixing velocity wm and the mixing length lm. Based on observations of turbulence intensity measurements, the mixing velocity wm is represented by an exponential function decaying with z. We suggest two theoretical functions for the mixing length, a first lm1 obtained from the k-equation written as a constant modeled fluctuating kinetic energy flux and a second lm2 based on von K\'arm\'an's similarity hypothesis. These analytical tools were used in the finite-mixing-length model of Nielsen and Teakle (2004). The modeling of time-mean sediment concentration profiles C(z) over wave ripples shows that at the opposite of the second equation lm2 which increases the upward convexity of C(z), the first equation lm1 increases the upward concavity of C(z) and is able to reproduce the shape of the measured concentrations for coarse sand.     Within the Dirac- and Lorentz-bubble potential models an electronic structure of the doubly-charged negative ion has been studied by a variational method. It is shown that even in the first approximation of this method when a trial wave function of the two electrons is represented as a product of one-electron functions the total energy of the system is negative, a manifestation of the existence of a stable state of the doubly-charged negative ion in these models. The second electron affinity of C60 according to estimation is about 1 eV. The photodetachment cross sections of this ion have been calculated as well. Near threshold behavior of cross section is found to exhibit peculiar and interesting behavior. The first cross section accompanied by the transformation of the doubly-charged negative ion into a singly-charged one is exponentially small near the process threshold. The second cross section corresponds to the photodetachment of a singly-charged ion; it increases at the threshold as a power function of the kinetic energy of the photoelectron. These cross sections are of the same order as the photodetachment cross sections of atomic ions with the same electron affinity.     The matrix element of the kinetic energy operator between B meson states is computed by means of a QCD relativistic potential model, with the result: $\mu_\pi^2=0.66 GeV^2$.     Basic assumptions of the NLTE approximation in stellar atmospheres are summarized. The assumptions of thermodynamic equilibrium, local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE), and non-LTE (NLTE) are compared. It is emphasized that LTE is a poor approximation if radiative transitions dominate in stellar atmospheres. The equations of kinetic equilibrium and methods of their solution are discussed.     In 1993 the Nijmegen group published the results of energy-dependent partial-wave analyses (PWAs) of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering data for laboratory kinetic energies below Tlab=350 MeV (PWA93). In this talk some general aspects, but also the newest developments on the Nijmegen NN PWAs are reported. We have almost finished a new energy-dependent PWA and will discuss some typical aspects of this new PWA; where it differs from PWA93, but also what future developments might be, or should be.     We present numerical studies of compressible, decaying turbulence, with and without magnetic fields, with initial rms Alfven and Mach numbers ranging up to five, and apply the results to the question of the support of star-forming interstellar clouds of molecular gas. We find that, in 1D, magnetized turbulence actually decays faster than unmagnetized turbulence. In all the regimes that we have studied 3D turbulence-super-Alfvenic, supersonic, sub-Alfvenic, and subsonic-the kinetic energy decays as (t-t0)^(-x), with 0.85 < x < 1.2. We compared results from two entirely different algorithms in the unmagnetized case, and have performed extensive resolution studies in all cases, reaching resolutions of 256^3 zones or 350,000 particles. We conclude that the observed long lifetimes and supersonic motions in molecular clouds must be due to external driving, as undriven turbulence decays far too fast to explain the observations.     We prove the existence and uniqueness of positive analytical solutions with positive initial data to the mean field equation (the Dyson equation) of the Dyson Brownian motion through the complex Burgers equation with a force term on the upper half complex plane. These solutions converge to a steady state given by Wigner's semicircle law. A unique global weak solution with nonnegative initial data to the Dyson equation is obtained and some explicit solutions are given by Wigner's semicircle laws. We also construct a bi-Hamiltonian structure for the system of the real and imaginary components of the complex Burgers equation (coupled Burgers system). We establish a kinetic formulation for the coupled Burgers system and prove the existence and uniqueness of entropy solutions. The coupled Burgers system in Lagrangian variable naturally leads to two interacting particle systems: Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou model with nearest-neighbor interactions, and Calogero-Moser model.     In two recent papers the authors study the existence of weak solutions and the hydrodynamic limit of kinetic flocking equations with strong local alignment. The introduction of a strong local alignment term to model flocking behavior was formally motivated in these papers as a limiting case of an alignment term proposed by Motsch and Tadmor. In this paper, we rigorously justify this limit, and show that the considered equation is indeed a limit of the Motsch-Tadmor model when the radius of interaction goes to zero.     For the calculation of turbulent mixing in the bottom boundary layer, we present simple analytical tools for the mixing velocity wm and the mixing length lm. Based on observations of turbulence intensity measurements, the mixing velocity wm is represented by an exponential function decaying with z. We suggest two theoretical functions for the mixing length, a first lm1 obtained from the k-equation written as a constant modeled fluctuating kinetic energy flux and a second lm2 based on von K\'arm\'an's similarity hypothesis. These analytical tools were used in the finite-mixing-length model of Nielsen and Teakle (2004). The modeling of time-mean sediment concentration profiles C(z) over wave ripples shows that at the opposite of the second equation lm2 which increases the upward convexity of C(z), the first equation lm1 increases the upward concavity of C(z) and is able to reproduce the shape of the measured concentrations for coarse sand.     Within the Dirac- and Lorentz-bubble potential models an electronic structure of the doubly-charged negative ion has been studied by a variational method. It is shown that even in the first approximation of this method when a trial wave function of the two electrons is represented as a product of one-electron functions the total energy of the system is negative, a manifestation of the existence of a stable state of the doubly-charged negative ion in these models. The second electron affinity of C60 according to estimation is about 1 eV. The photodetachment cross sections of this ion have been calculated as well. Near threshold behavior of cross section is found to exhibit peculiar and interesting behavior. The first cross section accompanied by the transformation of the doubly-charged negative ion into a singly-charged one is exponentially small near the process threshold. The second cross section corresponds to the photodetachment of a singly-charged ion; it increases at the threshold as a power function of the kinetic energy of the photoelectron. These cross sections are of the same order as the photodetachment cross sections of atomic ions with the same electron affinity.     Basic assumptions of the NLTE approximation in stellar atmospheres are summarized. The assumptions of thermodynamic equilibrium, local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE), and non-LTE (NLTE) are compared. It is emphasized that LTE is a poor approximation if radiative transitions dominate in stellar atmospheres. The equations of kinetic equilibrium and methods of their solution are discussed.     In 1993 the Nijmegen group published the results of energy-dependent partial-wave analyses (PWAs) of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering data for laboratory kinetic energies below Tlab=350 MeV (PWA93). In this talk some general aspects, but also the newest developments on the Nijmegen NN PWAs are reported. We have almost finished a new energy-dependent PWA and will discuss some typical aspects of this new PWA; where it differs from PWA93, but also what future developments might be, or should be.     We present numerical studies of compressible, decaying turbulence, with and without magnetic fields, with initial rms Alfven and Mach numbers ranging up to five, and apply the results to the question of the support of star-forming interstellar clouds of molecular gas. We find that, in 1D, magnetized turbulence actually decays faster than unmagnetized turbulence. In all the regimes that we have studied 3D turbulence-super-Alfvenic, supersonic, sub-Alfvenic, and subsonic-the kinetic energy decays as (t-t0)^(-x), with 0.85 < x < 1.2. We compared results from two entirely different algorithms in the unmagnetized case, and have performed extensive resolution studies in all cases, reaching resolutions of 256^3 zones or 350,000 particles. We conclude that the observed long lifetimes and supersonic motions in molecular clouds must be due to external driving, as undriven turbulence decays far too fast to explain the observations.     We prove the existence and uniqueness of positive analytical solutions with positive initial data to the mean field equation (the Dyson equation) of the Dyson Brownian motion through the complex Burgers equation with a force term on the upper half complex plane. These solutions converge to a steady state given by Wigner's semicircle law. A unique global weak solution with nonnegative initial data to the Dyson equation is obtained and some explicit solutions are given by Wigner's semicircle laws. We also construct a bi-Hamiltonian structure for the system of the real and imaginary components of the complex Burgers equation (coupled Burgers system). We establish a kinetic formulation for the coupled Burgers system and prove the existence and uniqueness of entropy solutions. The coupled Burgers system in Lagrangian variable naturally leads to two interacting particle systems: Fermi-Pasta-Ulam-Tsingou model with nearest-neighbor interactions, and Calogero-Moser model.     In two recent papers the authors study the existence of weak solutions and the hydrodynamic limit of kinetic flocking equations with strong local alignment. The introduction of a strong local alignment term to model flocking behavior was formally motivated in these papers as a limiting case of an alignment term proposed by Motsch and Tadmor. In this paper, we rigorously justify this limit, and show that the considered equation is indeed a limit of the Motsch-Tadmor model when the radius of interaction goes to zero. The analysis involves velocity averaging lemmas and several $L^p$ estimates. 10 pages
