Abstract This paper describes a power system simulation and energy management system with particular reference to operation under dynamic conditions. In order to provide continuing assistance to power system operators during network islanding and other extreme conditions it is important that the energy management software should be robust. The major functional elements of the energy management system and their relationship with the simulation system are considered. The dynamic behaviour of a medium scale power system model and associated energy management software is studied and results are presented with particular emphasis on the performance of the simulation, analysis and control algorithms during emergency conditions.

The fundamentals of how PCM materials works need more consideration. It has been reported that using PCM materials may reduce the cooling/heating loads in buildings. PCM can only affect the fluctuation of the load and not the magnitude of the load. Thus PCM materials should be considered as an energy management tool only. For PCM to operate effectively the cycle of charging and discharging of PCM material should be completed over the period of the day, i.e. PCM must be melted and solidified over the 24 hrs of the day. Using the appropriate amount of the PCM will maximize its usage. Fewer amounts will show more fluctuation in the load and larger amount will be a waste without benefit. The appropriate amount for an application is found to be function of PCM properties, k, Cp, density and melting temperature. For PCM to complete the whole cycle in a day period melting temperature need to be near the average between the indoor and outdoor design temperature of the conditioned space. In this investigations a one dimensional model were investigated and solved numerically using finite difference technique. The effect of the amount of PCM material on load fluctuation is calculated and presented. Packing capsulated PCM material of linearly varying melting temperatures is found to maximize the effectiveness of the technique.Copyright © 2011 by ASME

Microgrids are becoming one of the main components of future smart grids. Ensuring their optimal and stable operation is of crucial importance and can be a challenging task. In this paper, two optimization algorithms are implemented for scheduling the microgrid operation in grid-connected and islanded modes, according to the priorities and objectives in each mode. For achieving an optimal operation at each mode, the proposed scheme is able to shed loads, define the generation level of the photovoltaics and regulate the charging/discharging level of the Energy Storage System (ESS). The effectiveness of the proposed scheduling is demonstrated through an analytical real-time simulation, where various transitions between the grid-connected and islanded modes are considered. The results indicate that the proposed scheme is able to regulate successfully the energy flows of the microgrid even under various transitions.

AbstractCloud computing provides online services to users from anywhere in a pay‐as‐you‐go basis. This leads to the construction of different forms of data centers around the world, which usually consumes huge amount of energy and produce pollution (heat and carbon dioxide footprint). Many efforts have focused on managing cloud resources to decrease their energy consumption. Since servers are the highest energy consumers in data centers, most researchers have focused on optimizing their energy consumption while other resources such as network devices and cooling systems have received less attention. In this paper, we propose a network‐aware virtual machine (VM) relocation algorithm, which optimizes the distribution of the VMs running on the data center in order to conserve energy in both servers and network devices (switches). The proposed technique targets the communicated VMs and places them closer to each other. This would reduce the traffic overhead between any communicating VMs so that fewer network devices are involved in the communication process. This also increases the VMs consolidation to some servers while leaving other servers idle. Switching off the idle servers and network devices would significantly reduce the total energy consumed by the data center. The proposed algorithm is evaluated using simulation and the performance of the proposed algorithm is compared against different previously proposed algorithms in the literature. Performance metrics used are the energy consumed by the host and by the network switches, the service level agreement violations, and the number of VM migrations. The impact of different packet sizes, the efficiency of switching the network elements to sleep mode, and the impact of resource homogeneity and heterogeneity are also studied and discussed. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms the existing algorithms in terms of all evaluation metrics.

Abstract With increasing energy prices, nuclear energy concerns, climate changes, and electrical grid losses, the demand to rely on more renewable energy is growing. The majority of people currently prefer to live and work in smart environments, such as smart cities and smart institutions with an integrated smart microgrid. Energy management is a complex topic because a large amount of these smart microgrid systems rely on hybrid energy sources. As a result, a smart energy management controller needs to be created. The current research provides a new energy management control technique for a smart DC-microgrid based on a combined fuzzy logic controller (FLC) and high order sliding mode (HSMC) methods. The hybrid energy provider integrated into the DC-microgrid is made up of a battery bank, wind energy, photovoltaic (PV) energy, and tidal energy source. The new proposed intelligent control is intended to regulate source-side converters (SSCs) in order to capture the maximum energy from hybrid renewable energy sources (wind, tidal and PV) while also improving power quality in the DC-microgrid. To keep the microgrid as cost-effective as feasible, renewable energy sources are prioritized. The suggested controller offers a steady output power and sustained service. From the present simulation results under Matlab/Simulink and the comparative analysis, the proposed controller produces +1.02% wind power, +10% PV power, +100% tidal power, and +8.48% load power over intelligent fractional-order proportional–integral–derivative (PID) and more when compared to the super twisting fractional-order and PID controls. In addition, the suggested controller assures smooth output power and uninterrupted service.

State estimation (SE) is the main function of energy management system (EMS) in smart grids (SG) integrated with renewable resources. Therefore, it is very important to evaluate the accuracy of SE results for efficient EMS. The SE problem of power system can be formulated by several techniques. The most common technique is the weighted least squares (WLS). The introduction of synchronized phasor measurement units (PMU) to SGs has greatly enhanced the SE of the system state variables. In this paper, four accuracy indexes are addressed, namely, mean absolute estimated error (MAE), mean squares error (MSE), longest common sequence (LCS) and Gaussian kernel (Correntropy (COE)). These indexes are used to evaluate the accuracy of two types of estimator; conventional WLS based estimator and a hybrid state estimator consists of WLS and PMU.

Monitoring electricity consumption has a key role in reducing energy consumption. This monitoring can be frequent (several times per week) or continuous. Recent studies showed that such monitoring can reduce residential energy consumption by as much as 15%. The development of energy management systems in the monitoring systems and intelligent energy meters have been going for a while. In this paper, we will present a new electricity monitoring device called “E-ring”. E-ring is a non-invasive tool mainly made from a current transformer clamp meter that clamps to the main electricity cables of the user’s home and measures the electrical consumption and sends the measured data to an online server and then makes it accessible from the user’s mobile phone using a specially-developed mobile application. It has many advantages such as low data rate, low price, and real-time access to the consumption data and simultaneously calculate the estimated price for the household/industrial electricity bill with a tolerance of around 2%.

Sharing power data between electrical power grids is vital issue in energy management. The multi-agent approach has been used in many applications that can support the development of complex systems by making them independent and collaborative. The smart grid is one of the most complex system that expected to have higher level of independence and reliability with adequate protection and adaptation to the response of the user’s request. A multi-agent system is used in this paper to share knowledge and overcome challenges in smart grids. The information shared is used to make a decision that helps in managing power distribution within the grid and with other networks. The presented multi-agent mechanism enhances power system reliability by providing the correct information at the critical time. The results show that the multi-agent system was performed in an efficient and timely manner, which makes it very promising to be excellent candidate for smart grid management.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has been one of the influential paradigms in the development of logistics transport functions. The introduction of IoT in logistics has impacted application areas such as capacity sensing, planning, route optimization, and energy management. However, most works presented so far assume the existence of physical addresses for all applications. This paper, as a result, deals with the logistics delivery inefficiency represented by the lack of physical addresses that is common developing countries. We adopt an IoT approach to propose a virtual addressing framework for tracking, monitoring, and managing package deliveries efficiently. The framework consists of a node network that provides address information virtually to enable better deliveries.
