Applications and possible benefits of battery energy storage systems (BESS) have been discussed widely in scientific literature and industry. In an attempt to prepare for upcoming challenges the utility of the Canton of Zurich, EKZ, has acquired the largest BESS of Switzerland. The Zurich 1 MW BESS was designed to provide maximum versatility towards various possible BESS applications. The use cases intended to investigate within the project are outlined and first findings of a peak shaving algorithm applied to an office-building are presented.

Shafiullah;Muhammad Adnan Hayat; Farhad Shahnia; Gm. Shafiullah;Community solar consisting of rooftop photovoltaic systems (RPVs) and battery energy storage systems, when designed properly, can address and solve many of the design and adoptability challenges brought by the individual RPVs and battery energy storage. Such systems can benefit many of the remote and rural communities, that are usually supplied by diesel generators, or long traditional distribution lines, which in addition to being expensive often don’t provide the reliability at desired level. These systems can also benefit most of the urban areas since the unmanaged penetration of RPVs has resulted in the undesired duck curve profile in the network. To this end, this paper proposes and verifies the appropriate design criteria for community solar projects with an aim to improve the network duck curve profile, enable peak-shaving and increase the self-sufficiency of the community.

As opposed to the customary control methods this scheme proposes using genetic algorithm (GA) for the automatic updating of proportional and integral gains. Improvement in damping of frequency and power oscillations are presented. The tracking of reference power to actual power is also displayed.

Based on the comparison between measure curve and simulation cure, the verification method and steps are proposed including: model simulation, experimental test and model evaluation, etc., and an actual case is analyzed to verify the validity of the method. Research shows that as an important flexible source, the accuracy of simulation model parameters is particularly important for dispatching and operation control of battery energy storage system. The above-mentioned verification method has important practical needs and engineering application value for grid-integration simulation decision of battery energy storage system.
