Indeed, the cooling improves the conversion capacity of this one and maintains, under extreme conditions of air temperature, the panel temperature at an appreciable level which avoids the altering. To do this, a fan provides forced circulation of air. Because the fan is supplied by the panel, it is necessary to determine the optimum operating point that unites efficiency of the PV with the consumption of the fan. For this matter, numerical simulations are performed at varying mass flow rates of air, under two extreme air temperatures (50°C, 25°C) and a fixed solar radiation (1000W.m2) in a case of no wind.

The imbalance between energy resource availability, demand, and production capacity, coupled with inherent economic and environmental uncertainties make strategic energy resources planning, management, and decision-making a challenging process. In this paper, a descriptive approach has been taken to synthesize the world’s energy portfolio and the global energy balance outlook in order to provide insights into the role of Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in maintaining “stability” and “balance” of the world’s energy market. This synthesis illustrates that in the absence of stringent policies, i.e., if historical trends of the global energy production and consumption hold into the future, it is unlikely that non-conventional liquid fuels and renewable energy sources will play a dominant role in meeting global energy demand by 2030. This should be a source of major global concern as the world may be unprepared for an ultimate shift to other energy sources when the imminent peak oil production is reached. OPEC’s potential to impact the supply and price of oil could enable this organization to act as a facilitator or a barrier for energy transition policies, and to play a key role in the global energy security through cooperative or non-cooperative strategies. It is argued that, as the global energy portfolio becomes more balanced in the long run, OPEC may change its typical high oil price strategies to drive the market prices to lower equilibria, making alternative energy sources less competitive. Alternatively, OPEC can contribute to a cooperative portfolio management approach to help mitigate the gradually emerging energy crisis and global warming, facilitating a less turbulent energy transition path while there is time.

The specific technical challenges associated with the design of an ambient energy powered electronic system currently requires thorough knowledge of the environment of deployment, energy harvester characteristics and power path management. In this work, a novel flexible model for ambient energy harvesters is presented that allows decoupling of the harvester's physical principles and electrical behavior using a three dimensional function. The model can be adapted to all existing harvesters, resulting in a design methodology for generic ambient energy powered systems using the presented model. Concrete examples are included to demonstrate the versatility of the presented design in the development of electronic appliances on system level.

AbstractMany small endotherms use torpor, saving energy by a controlled reduction of their body temperature and metabolic rate. Some species (e.g. arctic ground squirrels, hummingbirds) enter deep torpor, dropping their body temperatures by 23-37 °C, while others can only enter shallow torpor (e.g., pigeons, 3-10 °C reductions). However, deep torpor in mammals can increase predation risk (unless animals are in burrows or caves), inhibit immune function, and result in sleep deprivation, so even for species that can enter deep torpor, facultative shallow torpor might help balance energy savings with these potential costs. Deep torpor occurs in three avian orders. Although the literature hints that some bird species can use both shallow and deep torpor, little empirical evidence of such an avian torpor spectrum exists. We infrared imaged three hummingbird species that are known to use deep torpor, under natural temperature and light cycles, to test if they were also capable of shallow torpor. All three species used both deep and shallow torpor, often on the same night. Depending on the species, they used shallow torpor for 5-35% of the night. The presence of a bird torpor spectrum indicates a capacity for fine-scale physiological and genetic regulation of avian torpid metabolism.

The Network Code on Gas Balancing of Transmission Networks stimulates the development of the wholesale gas market by encouraging balance responsible parties to use standardized balancing mechanisms. To balance their portfolios, balance responsible parties can use renominations of quantities at entry and exit points, trade on a virtual trading point or trade on a trading platform. In the event of a system imbalance, Plinacro, as the operator of the gas transmission system in the Republic of Croatia, activates the balancing energy to return the system within acceptable limits. In accordance with the Rules on the Organization of the Gas Market, the Croatian Energy Market Operator performs a monthly calculation of the daily imbalance charge, trades conducted on the trading platform for balancing activities, a neutrality charge and a charge for deviation from the nominated quantities which have been analysed in this paper based on the case study of a chosen balancing group. The analyses conducted in the paper have shown that the balance responsible party may be entitled to compensation or be liable to pay compensation based on the monthly calculation of the Croatian Energy Market Operator, HROTE, depending on the value of each charge. Plinacro as the forecasting party is preparing a new model for the allocation of gas quantities that will affect the operations of gas suppliers, DSOs and especially BRPs. Based on this analysis, it could be concluded that more accurate estimated consumption for a balancing group leads to cost optimization and a more transparent gas market.
